B>G>O> Presents: Kate Lee Short – Solo Exhibition

Opening Reception: Friday June 5th 7-10pm

Basement Gallery Oakland
1027 3rd Street, Oakland, CA 94607

Oakland, May 1st, 2015 – Basement Gallery Oakland is thrilled to announce an exhibition of new works by sound sculptor, Kate Lee Short. On view June 5th-July 3rd. Open Saturdays 1-5pm

Inspired by the acoustics of intimate spaces such as churches as well as the physical effects of low frequency noise, Kate Lee Short's auditory installations envelope the listener within unexpectedly intimate surroundings. Her work alludes to the architecture of sacred spaces, the field of neuroacoustics and a long lineage of minimalist sculpture that implicates the body. An artist who insists on subtlety, Kate’s works alternatively dish out seductive comfort and opposing feelings of unease by working with the way we as humans subconsciously use sound to process our surroundings. In keeping with Donald Judd’s monumental minimalist interventions her bold sculptures command the entirety of space they inhabit.

This exhibition will feature new site-specific works that augment and activate the existing structure of the building while turning the walls into speakers, the windows into lenses and the gallery space into a transcendent zone.

Basement Gallery Oakland was started to facilitate all forms of creative expression, with a primary emphasis on authentic works that concentrate on expanding the perceived limits of creativity. Our mission is to showcase cutting edge art of all formats based on the merits of its originality and creative authenticity. We especially seek experiential, collaborative, or site specific works.
